Bank of Japan decisions arrive without a clock

Post by Amanhasnoname »

Most major central banks announce decisions at a fixed time. The Bank of Japan's meetings have a defined date, but the exact timing of the announcement is not fixed and typically occurs sometime around midday in Tokyo, depending on when the meeting ends.

That uncertainty makes the event hard to avoid. Without a scheduled minute, a scalper cannot simply stand aside five minutes before. The window of risk stretches across hours.

Reactions in USD/JPY and cross-yen pairs can be violent, with gaps and spreads that widen considerably. Past decisions have produced some of the largest single moves in yen pairs.

The safest approach is to avoid trading yen pairs for the entire meeting day during the plausible window, or to use only very small positions. Watching the spread and the tick rate in real time helps detect the moment of the release, but reaction time is limited.

For those who trade Asian hours, it is worth reviewing how the pairs behaved in previous meetings, particularly the liquidity before and after.
