GBP/USD and its habit of fast spikes

Post by Amanhasnoname »

Cable has a reputation for sharp, sudden moves. Compared with EUR/USD, it shows larger average ranges and more frequent spikes, often around UK data, Bank of England communication, and political headlines.

For scalpers, the pair offers more movement per unit of time, but it also brings more slippage and wider spreads. The tails are fatter. A stop placed with EUR/USD logic can be run by a spike that reverses within seconds.

Intraday, the pair tends to be most active in the London morning and the overlap with New York. Spikes often occur at the start of the London session, around 8:00 and 9:30 UK time when data lands.

Position sizing should reflect the larger typical range. Using the same pip-based stop as on other pairs implies a different risk-to-noise ratio.

Analyze the distribution of one-minute ranges for the pair compared with others. The right tail shows the difference. Adjust stops and targets according to the observed noise.

How do stop distances and sizes differ between cable and the other pairs in the system?
