Gold trades as a safe-haven asset and as a dollar-denominated commodity. Its moves often coincide with shifts in the dollar and in safe-haven currencies such as the Swiss franc and the yen.
For forex scalpers, gold acts as a cross-check. A sharp rally in gold with a weaker dollar supports short dollar trades. A rally in gold with a stronger franc points to a risk-off mood.
The correlation is not stable. It depends on the dominant driver at the time, such as real yields, inflation expectations, or geopolitical stress. In some regimes the link to the dollar is strong, in others it vanishes.
Execution matters as well. If the broker offers gold as a CFD on the same platform, the data is convenient. Feed quality and timestamps may differ from those of currency pairs.
A reasonable approach is tracking a rolling correlation between gold and the pair at the strategy's horizon. When it is high, use gold as a confirming filter. When it is near zero, ignore it.
Which cross-asset series gives the most reliable confirmation for the pairs traded?
