Half-figure levels and why the 50 matters less than the 00

Post by Amanhasnoname »

Round numbers attract orders, and the big figures ending in 00 are the best known. The half-figure levels ending in 50 get attention too, but usually less. The difference shows in the data.

Counting the density of touches, reversals, and stop clusters around levels reveals the hierarchy. On many pairs, the 00 levels show stronger reactions than the 50 levels, which in turn show stronger reactions than random quarter levels.

Option strikes, institutional order placement, and psychological reference all contribute. The effect varies by pair and by market phase. USD/JPY, for example, tends to show strong reactions at whole yen figures.

For scalpers, the hierarchy helps prioritize. A setup near a 00 level deserves more weight than one near a 37 level. Targets placed just before the level fill more reliably than targets exactly on it.

Test with historical data by measuring the probability of a bounce versus a break at each type of level.

The result is a map of where price is likely to hesitate.

Which levels show the strongest reaction on the pair being traded, 00, 50, or neither?
