Rituals and the comfort of routine

Some traders have routines: the same coffee, the same chart layout, the same ten-minute review before the open. Others have superstitions: a lucky pen, a certain chair, no trading on certain days.

A ritual can help. A pre-session routine sets expectations, clears the mind, and signals the start of work. A consistent layout reduces setup time and cognitive load.

A superstition is a different thing. Believing a lucky object affects outcomes can lead to anxiety when it's missing, and to attributing results to the wrong cause.

The line between them is blurry. The test is function. Does the habit improve preparation or reduce errors? If so, it's a routine. If it's purely symbolic, it's harmless at best.

Evidence can be gathered. Compare results on days when the routine was performed to days when it wasn't. If no difference exists, the benefit is psychological, which isn't nothing, but shouldn't be confused with an edge.

Rituals also shouldn't become a trap. A routine that must be completed before trading can turn into an excuse to avoid a day when conditions are poor.

Pure comfort or measurable effect: which routines belong in which bucket?
