The Australian dollar is often treated as a liquid stand-in for Chinese economic momentum, because China is a major buyer of Australian exports, iron ore above all. When Chinese activity surveys, trade figures or stimulus announcements surprise, AUD/USD frequently reacts, sometimes within the same minute the figures cross the wires.
Timing is a quiet feature of this link. Many Chinese releases arrive during the Asian morning, when the Australian dollar is already among the more actively traded majors, so the reaction does not wait for London to open. Australian data adds its own events, such as the labour force report, published in the late morning in Sydney. Both fall in sessions where liquidity is lighter than in Europe, and spreads can reflect that.
The proxy is imperfect. Chinese data can disappoint while the dollar's own direction dominates the pair, and iron ore prices, Reserve Bank of Australia tone and global risk appetite all compete for influence. A scalper observing the pair can check the yuan and Chinese equity response, since broad agreement across them suggests a genuine China-driven impulse, whereas an isolated AUD move may owe more to dollar flows than to Chinese news.

Re: AUD/USD and China Data: Reading the Proxy Relationship Carefully
Good to see the caution. From our Asian session logs, the link between China data and AUDUSD is strongest for surprises in trade data and the official PMIs, and weaker for CPI. When the data came out together with a strong move in iron ore futures in Dalian, the AUD reaction was larger and lasted longer.
Also, the AUD reacts to RBA expectations and to global risk sentiment, which can dominate China data. On days when US yields are moving a lot, the proxy relationship can disappear completely.
