Got charged a full day of swap on a trade that lived 40 seconds past rollover

Post by Shadow Trader »

A scalp opened at 16:59:30 server time and closed at 17:00:20 can carry a full day of negative swap. Nothing about the trade was a swing. The clock did the damage.

Rollover is a timestamp check, not a duration check. The platform looks at whether a position was open at the moment the day turned over, and if it was, the swap is booked for the entire day. Ten seconds past the line and ten hours past the line usually get the same charge.

The twist is that the charge often looks tiny next to the profit, so it slides by unnoticed. On a pair with a steep negative swap, though, it can swallow a real slice of a scalp that was only aiming for a few pips. Open the statement, sort by close time, and look at the swap column on anything that closed within a minute or two of the daily cutoff. The pattern tends to jump out.

A few wrinkles worth knowing:

- Triple swap day is usually Wednesday on most FX pairs, covering the weekend. A scalp that straddles that rollover can be billed three days of carry. Some brokers move the triple day for metals, indices or crypto, so the calendar is not identical across the symbol list.

- Rollover follows the broker's server clock, which often shifts with US daylight saving. For a couple of weeks each spring and autumn the cutoff can sit an hour away from where it was the month before.

- The same accident can occasionally pay positive swap, but many brokers mark both sides down, so counting on that is a poor bet.

Has a surprise swap charge on a tiny trade ever shown up on a statement before the rollover pattern was obvious?
