Copy-trading leaderboards reward the survivors, not the skilled

Post by Shadow Trader »

Browse a copy-trading platform and the top providers show impressive returns, tight drawdowns and thousands of followers. It looks like a menu of proven talent.

Several biases are baked in. Thousands of providers start; the ones whose early luck was good rise to the top, and the rest disappear or stay unseen. Look at any list after a period and it contains those who got lucky as well as those with skill, and the two are hard to separate.

Style matters too. Many top performers use risk patterns that look great until they don't, such as holding losers without stops, adding to losing positions or selling volatility. Their curves are smooth for months and then end abruptly.

For scalping providers, there's another issue. Followers receive trades after a delay, and the copied entry is worse than the original. A strategy with a thin edge on the provider's account can lose money on every follower's account.

Checking requires some digging. How long is the live record? What is the worst drawdown, and what would a follower have experienced after delays and spreads? Does the provider trade the same way in all market conditions?

Past returns on a leaderboard are the least informative number on the page.

What turned out to be the most reliable sign of a durable provider, if any?
