Operating system updates have a talent for bad timing

Post by Shadow Trader »

The scalper sits down for the London open. The platform loads, charts are up, and a message appears: updates are ready, restart in five minutes. Or worse, there's no warning, and the machine restarts overnight with a position open.

Automatic restarts are one of the most boring causes of avoidable losses. Active hours settings help but aren't foolproof. Updates that download in the background can eat bandwidth and CPU at the wrong moment.

A dedicated trading machine or VPS with updates set to manual, applied on a weekend, removes the problem. On a shared computer, setting the active hours to cover the full trading day and checking for pending updates before each session reduces the risk.

The same goes for antivirus scans, cloud backup clients and browser updates. Anything that can wake up and use resources on its own schedule can interfere.

Has an update or restart ever interrupted a live session?
