Plenty of brokers lower maximum leverage or raise margin requirements on certain symbols ahead of high-impact news or over the weekend. The rules differ a lot, and the notice is often buried in an email or a banner, so the client agreement is the place to confirm what applies and when.
The danger is stacked scalps: adding several same-direction entries on one move. Example with 5,000 USD equity and EURUSD near 1.10. One lot is about 110,000 USD notional. At 1:500, margin is 220 USD per lot, so 10 lots uses 2,200 USD, 44 percent of equity. Looks fine. If the requirement moves to 1:100, margin is 1,100 USD per lot and 10 lots needs 11,000 USD, more than twice the equity.
Some brokers apply new requirements only to new positions, others to everything open. Where it hits open positions, a margin call or stop-out can fire on a position that was perfectly safe an hour earlier, right when spreads are widest.
Practical habit: before news or a Friday close, work out margin at the stricter level, and trim stacked size until equity covers it with room to spare.
Has a broker ever applied a leverage change to positions already open, or only to new ones, and how much warning came with it?
