Dead sessions and the boredom trade

Post by Amanhasnoname »

Most scalping edges depend on movement. Late New York, the Asian lull on majors, the hours after London lunch: ranges shrink to a few pips, spreads sit a bit wider relative to range, and the setups that work in volatile hours stop producing clean follow-through. A scalper who stays at the screen anyway is not looking for trades any more. The brain is looking for stimulation, and a marginal setup is stimulating.

Typical symptom: entries on patterns that would have been skipped at 09:00, with targets cut to one pip because "there is nothing more in this market". That is a trade where the spread eats a third or half of the target. Even a decent win rate cannot fix that arithmetic.

A practical test is to split a month of trades by hour and compute average pips net of spread for each. Many people find two or three hours that carry the whole result and several that bleed slowly. Then make the schedule match: trade the productive windows, and treat the rest as closed.

If staying near the screen is unavoidable, use that time for something with output, like tagging charts or updating the journal, so the platform is not the only thing on screen.
