Splitting a Fed decision day into separate risk windows

Post by FXS London Scalper »

An FOMC day contains at least two distinct volatility windows: the statement and projections at 14:00 New York time and the chair's briefing thirty minutes afterwards. Treating them as one event leads to stops being placed for the first move and then hit during the second.

A useful framing is to ask what each part can change. The statement mostly confirms the decision. The dot plot changes the expected path. The press conference adds tone and can contradict how the market read the dots. It is common to see a move on the dots that is fully reversed by a single answer to a journalist.

A conservative approach is to stay flat until the press conference has run for about 15 minutes, then trade only if price is holding outside the pre-event range. That sacrifices the initial reaction yet avoids getting whipsawed twice.

For European traders the timing matters too: the conference runs into the late evening in Prague, when liquidity is thin. How do you split the day, if at all?
