On the last few trading days of a month, and especially around quarter-end, a good share of currency flow has nothing to do with the trend or the news. Portfolio rebalancing, hedging by asset managers and corporate settlements push price in directions that technical setups do not anticipate. The effect is usually strongest into the London 4pm fix on the final business day.
What a scalper tends to notice is a strange drift: price grinds one way on low-quality volume, mean reversion entries keep failing, and ranges that were reliable all month suddenly extend. Because the cause is flow rather than sentiment, the move often retraces in the first days of the next month, which makes it feel like a fake-out afterwards.
Nothing here is a reliable signal for direction. The use is defensive. Tag the last three business days of each month on your trade log and compare the results of range and fade strategies against the rest of the month. If quarter-end days stand out as losing days, reduce size or switch off the fade logic for those sessions.
Also watch spread on those days, since liquidity providers sometimes price in the extra flow risk around the fix by widening a pip or so.
Do your mean-reversion trades behave differently in the last week of a quarter, and have you kept records that show it?
