Freeze level and minimum stop distance trip up tight scalps

Post by Amanhasnoname »

Two numbers in the contract specification decide whether a tight scalp can even be managed, and most traders only learn them from an error message. Stop level is the minimum distance between the current price and a pending order, stop or target. Freeze level is the distance inside which an order cannot be modified or cancelled at all.

Picture a trailing stop on a 2 pip scalp. If the stop level is 1 pip and the price is 1.2 pips from the stop, the trailing move fails. If the freeze level is 2 pips and the target is 1.5 pips away, an attempt to pull the target in to lock a gain also fails. The order is simply frozen, and the trade has to live or die as set.

What makes it nastier: these values can differ per symbol, may be zero in quiet times and nonzero in others, and some brokers raise them ahead of news. A script written against a zero value stops working the day it changes.

Habits that help:
- Read the specs for each symbol traded, not just the main pair.
- Have scripts read stop level and freeze level live before each modify call.
- Decide what the script does if the modify is refused: close at market, or leave it.

Has a freeze level ever stopped you from exiting a trade, and what was the fix?
