Sometimes one pair reacts a fraction of a second before a related one. The lead can come from deeper liquidity in one instrument, with the follower adjusting a moment later. EURUSD and EURGBP, or USDJPY and EURJPY, are common candidates.
That idea attracts scalpers because it looks like a free edge. Watch the leader, trade the follower. In practice, the lag is often tens of milliseconds, far below what a retail connection can exploit, and the spread on the follower eats whatever remains.
Where it can still matter is on slower scales, like a few seconds to a minute. A pair that lags during a sudden move might offer a short window, particularly in thinner crosses.
The fragility comes from instability. Lead and lag relationships shift with market conditions, shrink during busy periods, and vanish when others discover them. Anything built on them needs constant monitoring.
Has any lead and lag relationship held up long enough to be tradeable at retail latency?
Lead and lag between related pairs is a thing, but a fragile one
