Moving to break-even too early quietly lowers the win rate

Post by Amanhasnoname »

Pushing a stop to break-even after a small gain feels safe. It removes the risk of a loss, and the trade becomes free. The downside is that normal price noise often retraces to the entry level before continuing.

A stop at break-even gets hit by those retracements, converting trades that would have been winners into scratches. Over a large sample, the win rate falls, and the average win may not rise enough to compensate.

Testing the effect is easy in a backtest. Compare results with no break-even move, with a move after 1 pip, after 2 pips, and after the target is nearly reached. The best setting often turns out to be later than expected, or none at all.

Spread also plays a role. A break-even stop on a long position must account for the ask-bid gap, otherwise a tiny retracement stops it out at a loss.

Does the strategy use break-even stops, and what do the numbers say about their value?
