A common habit among scalpers is dragging a take profit or stop loss a pip or two as price moves. The problem is timing: modification requests travel through the same server as everything else, and a modification sent while the order is being filled or closed can fail, cause a conflict, or just arrive after the market already moved.
During fast action, a pending order change may arrive after the trigger, producing either a rejection or a fill at the old terms. Neither feels good. Some platforms return an error. Others silently ignore the request, leaving a trade open with the wrong parameters while the trader believes it was changed.
A simple discipline helps. After every modification, confirm on the position list that the new values are active, instead of assuming. It costs a glance, and it prevents the unpleasant surprise of a stop that never moved.
Fewer modifications also mean fewer failure points. Many scalpers get better results by setting the exit once and leaving it, which removes both the timing risk and the temptation to fiddle.
Do modifications get used heavily during trades, or are exits set at entry and left alone?
