Using tick direction to read pressure into a setup

Post by Amanhasnoname »

Counting upticks and downticks over a short window offers a rough sense of who is pushing price. A pullback with more downticks than upticks suggests selling pressure is still active, while a balanced or upward skew hints at fading pressure.

This can refine entry timing. Waiting for tick direction to shift in favour of the trade, after a pullback, reduces the chance of entering into continuing pressure.

The signal is noisy. Tick data reflects the broker's feed, and the counts differ between providers. Calibrating thresholds on a specific feed is necessary.

Combining it with price context improves reliability. A bullish tick shift at a level where price has reacted before carries more weight than the same shift in empty space.

Backtesting requires real tick data, which not everyone has. Forward testing with logs provides an alternative.

A simple counter on the chart, resetting every minute, is enough to start experimenting without building anything complicated.

Has a tick direction filter been used, and did it improve entries compared with price alone?
