Currency strength meters lag the move they describe

Post by Amanhasnoname »

Strength meters aggregate several pairs to show which currency is rising or falling. They look useful, and they have a built-in flaw: every number in them comes from price that has already moved.

By the time the meter shows the dollar as strongest, the best part of that move usually happened. Entering based on the reading often means buying after the push and sitting through the pullback that follows.

Calculation settings shift the picture too. A meter based on one-hour changes tells a different story from one using five-minute changes, and many tools hide the lookback window entirely.

Where they can help is as a sanity check on correlated exposure. If three open positions all rely on the same currency being strong, the meter makes that overlap visible at a glance.

Using it to choose which pair to trade after a signal already exists is a more sensible role than using it to create the signal in the first place.

Has a strength meter ever added anything beyond what the charts already showed?
