Order types that suit thin markets versus liquid ones

Post by Amanhasnoname »

The same order type behaves differently depending on liquidity. A market order in EURUSD during London fills almost instantly at a fair price. The same order in a thin cross at night can walk through several price levels.

Limit orders help in thin conditions by guaranteeing the price, but they risk not filling at all. A trader chasing a move with limits ends up watching it leave, and a trader using markets pays heavily in spread and slippage.

A reasonable pairing is market orders with tight deviation limits for liquid conditions, and limit orders placed slightly inside the quote for thin ones. Stop orders deserve the most caution in thin markets, since they convert to market orders into sparse liquidity.

Testing with small size across different conditions reveals how each order type performs. The results often differ by pair as much as by time.

Which order types work best on thin pairs, and which are avoided entirely?
