Thin holiday news and the overreaction problem

Post by Amanhasnoname »

Releases on holidays or in low-liquidity periods tend to cause outsized moves. The same surprise that moves price 10 pips on a normal day can move it 25 in a thin market.

Fewer participants mean orders face less resistance. Spreads also stay wider, so entries are expensive, and the move often partially retraces once normal liquidity returns.

Year-end is a classic example. Between Christmas and New Year, trading volumes drop dramatically, and a single headline can produce moves that look dramatic but lack follow-through.

For scalpers, this raises two problems. Stops are more likely to be hit by noise, and targets are harder to reach because moves fade quickly. The risk of slippage also increases.

A cautious approach is reducing size or stepping aside during holiday periods. If trading continues, wider stops and smaller positions fit the conditions better than regular settings.

Holiday seasons also tend to produce odd data gaps and stale quotes, which makes a clean test of any strategy nearly impossible during those weeks.

Does the strategy work in holiday periods, or does performance drop sharply?
