Daily loss caps need a number, not a feeling

Post by Amanhasnoname »

A daily loss limit works only if it is a specific figure decided in advance. Phrases like "stop when it feels bad" fail, because feelings are unreliable under pressure.

A common range is one to three percent of equity per day. Some scalpers use a number of stops instead, such as stopping after four consecutive losses or six in total.

The limit should reflect the strategy's typical variance. A system with a 50 percent win rate and equal sizes can easily lose five in a row. Setting a limit too tight triggers constantly, and setting it too loose offers no protection.

Reviewing the history to see how often various limits would have triggered, and what the subsequent trades did, informs the choice.

Enforcement matters most. Closing the platform, logging out, or using a script that blocks trading removes the option to break the rule.

Writing the figure on paper before the session starts, rather than deciding mid-session, is what makes the cap actually hold when emotions kick in.
