A trader looks at the 1 minute chart for entry and the 15 minute chart for context. The idea is that higher timeframes show the dominant direction, and lower ones fine-tune timing.
The benefit is real but modest. Higher timeframes reveal major levels, such as yesterday's high or a four-hour resistance, that a 1 minute chart cannot show. They also provide a directional filter, helping avoid trades against strong momentum.
The risk is conflicting information. A buy signal on the 1 minute chart may sit just below a strong resistance on the 15 minute chart. Decision paralysis follows, or worse, a justification gets invented for either choice.
A workable structure uses a fixed ratio, such as 1 to 5 or 1 to 15, and defines in advance what each timeframe contributes. The higher one sets bias and levels. The lower one provides the entry trigger.
Adding a third and fourth timeframe usually adds noise.
