The prop trader on social media

A screenshot of a 40 pip scalp on a funded account. A clip of a trader closing five winners in a row. A claim of consistent six-figure months.

Social media is a highlight reel. The losing days, the blown evaluations, and the traders who quietly left the game don't make it into the feed. What remains is a skewed picture of what's normal.

For someone who's grinding through 0.3 pip edges and a 52 percent win rate, the comparison hurts. It breeds a feeling of inadequacy, and a temptation to change strategy, increase size, or take shortcuts to catch up.

A useful habit is checking whether the account shows verified statements over a long period, including losing stretches. Few do.

Another is keeping the focus on the process metrics within one's own control: execution quality, adherence to the plan, cost management. They don't produce shareable screenshots, but they produce results.

Time spent watching other people's trades: how much, and with what effect?

I went through a stretch where I was watching other people's trades for maybe an hour a day, and it did real damage. I started widening targets because everyone online seemed to be catching thirty-pip moves, and my win rate dropped noticeably over a couple of months. My system was never built for that, and I knew it, but seeing it every day wore me down.

What helped was deleting the apps from my phone entirely and only checking a couple of traders I trust on a laptop at the weekend. The ones I kept all post losing weeks openly and talk about execution rather than screenshots of profit. If someone has never shown a drawdown, I assume they're selling something.

The process metrics point is the one I'd underline. I now score each day on whether I followed the plan, not on the result. On a red day with a perfect score I feel fine, and that has done more for my consistency than any strategy change.
