The psychology of the first trade of the day

Post by Shadow Trader »

The first trade of the session carries a weight that has nothing to do with its size. A win builds a small cushion and loosens discipline. A loss creates a hole that demands filling.

Both outcomes bend the next decision. After an early win, position size creeps up and setup quality slips. After an early loss, the urge to recover shows up as an immediate second trade, usually lower quality.

Some traders deal with this by deliberately making the first trade tiny, a half-size position taken only on the best setup of the morning. It lowers the emotional stakes and gives the brain a warm-up.

Others use a pre-session checklist that includes writing down the maximum daily loss before the first order. Having the number fixed in advance turns a stressful decision into a simple rule.

The first trade does not need to be the best trade. It only needs to leave the rest of the session intact.

Does the first trade of the day look different from the rest in the journal data?
