What happens to stops when the connection drops
A stop loss attached to a position is stored on the broker's server. When the trader's terminal disconnects, the stop stays active.
That is a relief for most cases. Positions are protected. But several things do not survive a disconnect: client-side trailing, EA logic, alerts, and any scripted management.
Orders placed through some third-party tools and copiers may also live on the tool's server, not the broker's. If that tool goes down, the orders vanish.
Some traders assume everything they set up is safe. Testing the assumption is simple: during a quiet moment, open a small position with a stop, disconnect the terminal, check from another device, and see what remains.
Knowing exactly what lives where gives a clear picture of the real risk when something fails.
One more layer: some brokers treat a long disconnect differently from a short one. A position held while the client is offline for hours may still be managed normally by the server, but alerts, partial closes and anything handled through add-on tools will not run. Knowing the boundary between server-side and client-side behaviour is worth writing down.
