Take a made-up example. Consensus for a data print sits at 2.0% and the actual comes in at 2.1%. A small beat, and the pair rallies hard.

Now flip it. Consensus is 2.4%, the actual is 2.3%. A trader sees "still higher than last month" and goes long. Price drops anyway.

The number itself means little. What matters is the gap to the forecast, and how big that gap is compared with how much forecasts usually miss by. A 0.1 point miss in a series where the consensus is usually off by 0.3 is noise. The same 0.1 in a series where forecasts are usually spot-on can be a real surprise.

Then comes the second layer. Whispers circulate before big releases, and the real positioning can sit above or below the official consensus. A print that beats the published number but misses the whisper can still sell off.

For scalping, this means the headline isn't enough. A trader who reacts to "above forecast" without knowing the usual spread of misses is guessing. Writing down the consensus, the actual and the typical miss size, then comparing it with how price behaved in the first minute, builds a feel quickly.

Which data series do you find hardest to read, where the gap and the reaction seem to disagree most often?
