same pair, two brokers, two different daily candles

Post by Shadow Trader »

The daily candle closes at different moments depending on the server. Many brokers run a GMT+2 or GMT+3 server time that shifts with US daylight saving, so the day ends around 5pm New York. Others use plain GMT or something else entirely.

Put the same pair on two platforms and the D1 bars can show different highs, lows and even different colours. A Friday bar looks huge on one and tame on the other, because the cut falls in a different place. Some brokers also show a thin Sunday bar while others fold it into Monday.

For a scalper on 1-minute charts it matters less. Still, any "previous day high" or "daily low" level is sensitive to it. Two traders can talk about yesterday's low and mean two different prices.

The pattern is simple. Levels marked from daily candles are only as shared as the server time behind them.

Weekly and monthly candles inherit the same quirk, so a monthly open can differ by a few pips between platforms as well.

Which server time does your broker use, and have daily levels ever failed to line up with someone else's?
