Opinion is split on the hawkish hold, when a central bank leaves rates unchanged but sounds tougher than expected.
One side says the currency should rally. The tone signals future hikes, so buy the dip and ride it. If the language shifts from "monitoring" to "ready to act", that is information and price should follow.
The other side says it's a trap. Rates didn't move, the real decision is still ahead, and talk is cheap. Plenty of tough statements fade within the hour once the press conference softens them.
Both are right sometimes. What decides it is how much was already in the price. If markets expected a dovish tone and got a firm one, the move can run. If the hawkish tone was fully expected, there's nothing left to buy.
Watch what happens to yields and short-dated rate futures at the same time. If those move with the currency, the market believes the message. If only the currency moves, it's usually thin and short-lived.
On a scalp timeframe the first spike is rarely the whole story, and the fade often matters more than the pop.
Where do you stand on this, do you trade the hold itself or wait for the press conference before taking a side?
