margin used is not the same as risk taken

Post by Shadow Trader »

Margin is a deposit. The broker holds it against the position, and it is worked out from position size and leverage. Risk is how much gets lost if the stop is hit. The two numbers are only loosely connected.

Take 1 lot EUR/USD with the price near 1.10. Notional is about $110,000. At 1:100 leverage the margin is about $1,100. At 1:500 it is about $220. Same trade, same stop, same loss if the stop hits. Only the deposit changed.

Now the other way. Two accounts each show 5% margin used. One has a 3 pip stop, the other has a 40 pip stop. The loss in dollars is wildly different even though the margin meter reads the same.

So watching the margin bar as a risk gauge gives false comfort (low margin, so safe) or false alarm. The real number is stop distance times position size, as a percentage of equity.

Margin does matter for one thing: it decides how much room is left before a margin call or stop-out. That is a different question from how much a trade can lose.

Does your platform show risk in money or percent before you click, or only the margin?
