Tick volume and spread move together, and that is a signal

On most retail platforms, the volume figure is tick volume, meaning the number of price changes in a bar. It is not real traded volume. Still, it correlates with activity, and it correlates strongly with spread.

When tick count per minute jumps, spreads usually widen shortly after, as liquidity providers adjust to the faster pace. When tick count drops and the spread is still wide, the market is thin. When both are low, the market is calm and cheap.

This gives scalpers a simple gauge. A high tick rate with a rising spread suggests a volatile, expensive market. A falling tick rate with a stable spread suggests quiet conditions where breakout strategies will probably fail.

None of this needs expensive data. A script that counts ticks per 30 seconds and logs the spread alongside takes an afternoon to write, and the relationship becomes visible quickly.

Used as a filter, it can keep a strategy out of the worst-cost periods without any prediction about direction.

Does anyone track tick rate as a filter, and which threshold worked for the pair being traded?
