Overtrading: the signs that show up before the damage

Post by Shadow Trader »

Overtrading doesn't announce itself. It creeps in through small decisions: one extra trade, one lower-quality setup, one session that runs an hour too long.

Signals worth watching:

1. Trade count creeping above the usual daily average.

2. Position sizes drifting upward.

3. Decreasing time between trades.

4. A growing share of trades that don't match a named setup.

5. Feeling restless when no trade is open.

Costs add up quickly. A scalper paying one pip per round trip across a hundred trades has spent a hundred pips before any edge enters the picture. If the edge is 0.5 pip per trade, the result is negative.

A plan with a defined trade limit and a list of valid setups provides structure. Anything outside the list is, by definition, not a trade.

Tracking the daily count in a visible spot, like a tally on paper beside the keyboard, keeps the number in view and makes the drift obvious sooner.

How does the average trade count in good months compare with bad months?
