Two trades or one: EURUSD and GBPUSD are close cousins

Post by Shadow Trader »

A scalper sees a buy setup on EURUSD and another on GBPUSD at nearly the same moment. Two separate trades, two separate risks, right? Not quite.

Both pairs have the dollar on the other side, and on most days their short-term moves are strongly correlated. When the dollar weakens, both tend to rise. When it strengthens, both tend to fall. Taking both positions at the same size is close to doubling the same bet.

That matters for risk math. If each trade risks 1 percent, the account might be risking nearly 2 percent on a single idea: dollar direction. A sudden dollar spike takes both stops at once, and what was supposed to be two independent 1 percent losses becomes one 2 percent hit.

Correlation isn't constant, either. It rises during dollar-driven days and falls on days when pair-specific news dominates, like a Bank of England decision. A scalper who checks correlation only in calm times gets caught when it jumps.

Some practical habits:

1. Treat correlated pairs as one position for risk purposes, splitting the risk budget between them.

2. Look at the rolling correlation over the last hour, not last month.

3. Be aware of pairs that share the same quote or base currency, since they also share hidden exposure.

4. Check the combined exposure to each single currency across all open trades. Three trades that all happen to be short dollar are one dollar trade in three costumes.

There's another side. Correlated pairs can offer a sanity check. If EURUSD breaks out but GBPUSD stays flat, the move may be euro-specific, and that changes how far it might run.

How is combined exposure tracked across open positions, if at all?
