The 20 EMA on the one-minute chart: what it can and can't do

Post by Shadow Trader »

Pull up a one-minute chart and a 20 period exponential moving average, and a pattern jumps out: in a clean trend, price rides the line, pulls back to it, and bounces. That's the appeal.

The weakness is that the line only describes what already happened. In a range it becomes a coin flip, with price crossing it every few candles. A scalper buying every touch gets chopped to pieces in sideways conditions.

What helps is a context filter. The slope of the average, for one. A flat line says no trend, so the bounce setup stays off. A steep line says momentum, so pullbacks are candidates.

Another filter is distance. When price has stretched far from the average, a pullback to it is likely, but entering at the line after a big stretch often means catching the tail end of the move.

Does the 20 EMA show up in the strategy, and what decides when it's ignored?
