How I mark speeches on my calendar after one bad morning

Post by FXS London Scalper »

Last spring I got caught short GBPUSD when a Bank of England speaker said something hawkish during a Q and A that nobody had flagged. The speech was on the calendar, I just hadn't treated it as an event. Since then speeches get their own handling.

My Sunday routine:
  • List every scheduled appearance by governors and voting members of the central banks for the currencies I trade. Non-voting staff go on a separate, lower priority list.
  • Mark the start time, but block out the whole hour after it. Prepared remarks are often released at the start, while the market-moving lines tend to come in the questions, sometimes 30 or 40 minutes in.
  • Note the topic if it is published. A speech on financial stability or payments is rarely an issue. Anything with "outlook" or "monetary policy" in the title is.
During the blocked window I trade half size and don't hold through the first minutes after the start time. If a headline hits, I close and wait for the dust to settle rather than trying to trade the first reaction.

Has anyone found a reliable feed for headlines from speeches? The delay between the comment and my news source is the weakest link.
