Counting how many trades come from boredom

Post by FXS London Scalper »

A journal tag worth adding: "B" for any trade you suspect you took because nothing was happening. Set it at entry, honestly, before the result.

After a couple of months, compare:
  • Share of trades with the B tag.
  • Win rate and average R of B trades against untagged trades.
  • What time B trades happen. For London scalpers, 10:30 to 12:00 is a likely cluster, when the open is over and the market slows.
  • Whether B trades happen on pairs that aren't on your normal list.
A worked example of the cost: if 14% of trades are B trades with a 38% win rate against 51% for the rest, at 1:1 reward that's about −0.24R per B trade. On 300 trades, 42 boredom trades cost about 10R.

A fix to try: after 10:30, only enter if the setup is one of your two best, and write the reason in one sentence before clicking. Writing the sentence is often enough to stop it.

It's uncomfortable to see how often boredom makes decisions. Has anyone else tracked this? I suspect the share is similar for many day traders.
