Across the leather booth, Danglars carefully clipped the end of a Cohiba. The Chief Risk Officer of Morrel Capital was a man constructed of sharp angles and cold, calculating stillness. He lit the cigar, taking a slow draw before letting the smoke pool between them.

"It is a tragedy of the free market, Fernand," Danglars said smoothly. "A street kid with a knack for identifying latency gaps sits in the big chair, while men of breeding and systemic value—like us—are relegated to his shadow. Morrel has handed him the keys to the kingdom. Next quarter, Edmond Dantès will control three billion in assets. Mercédès is marrying a king."

Fernand slammed his glass onto the mahogany table, fracturing the ice. "She was supposed to be mine. She is mine. He manipulated her just like he manipulated the order book today. I should hire someone to wait for him outside his condo and break both of his hands."

"Too volatile. Too much physical evidence," Danglars replied, leaning forward, the glowing cherry of his cigar illuminating his pale eyes. "If you break his hands, he’s a martyr. Mercédès will spoon-feed him soup until he heals. If you want a woman to abandon a man, you don't break his body. You break his reputation. You strip him of his license, his capital, and his future. You make him a ghost."

Fernand looked up, the raw jealousy in his eyes hardening into focus. "How? He’s the golden boy. The firm’s algorithms are practically worshiping him."

Danglars smiled, a thin, bloodless stretching of the lips. He opened his encrypted tablet and slid it across the table.

"Every golden boy has a blind spot," Danglars explained softly. "Edmond is brilliant at market microstructure, but he is completely ignorant of geopolitics and regulatory compliance. Last week, before Leclère had his coronary, the old man asked Edmond to execute a manual transfer through a dark pool in Geneva. It was a favor. A personal trade executed off the main ledger."

Fernand frowned, leaning in to look at the lines of hexadecimal code on the screen. "Off-ledger trading isn't a federal crime. It's a compliance fine at worst."

"It is a federal crime," Danglars corrected, his voice dropping to a whisper, "when the receiving wallet belongs to a sanctioned shadow-banker currently financing a proxy war. The SEC and the CFTC are desperate for a scalp. They want a high-profile indictment to prove they have teeth in the decentralized finance space."

"Did Edmond know who he was wiring the funds to?"

"Of course not. Edmond just saw a routing inefficiency and executed the script. He thought he was clearing a bottleneck for his boss," Danglars said, tapping the screen. "But what if the federal regulators received an anonymous, highly detailed whistleblower submission? A tip complete with server logs, IP addresses, and timestamps, proving that the new Head of Proprietary Trading at Morrel Capital is actively bypassing international sanctions to fund financial terrorism?"

Fernand’s breath hitched. The genius and the malice of the plan locked together perfectly in his mind. "They wouldn't just fire him. They would black-bag him."

"Treason and financial terrorism," Danglars nodded. "He would vanish into a federal black site. No bail. No trial date. And the beauty of it is, the server logs are real. Edmond really did push the button."

"But who sends the tip?" Fernand asked, his broker’s mind instantly looking for the liability. "If it traces back to Morrel Capital, you go down with him."

"That is where you come in, my friend," Danglars said, sliding a sleek, black USB drive onto the table. "You have access to offshore routing networks that Morrel’s compliance software can't touch. You take this drive. You plug it into a terminal in a public internet cafe on the edge of the city, route it through three Tor nodes, and submit it directly to the SEC’s emergency enforcement portal."

Fernand stared at the small black drive. It looked entirely innocuous, a tiny rectangle of plastic. Yet inside it was the digital guillotine that would sever Edmond Dantès from the world of the living.

"If I do this," Fernand said, his voice trembling with a mixture of terror and dark excitement, "Edmond is gone. Forever."

Fernand picked up the drive, the cold plastic burning against his palm. He slipped it into his tailored suit jacket, his jaw set in absolute resolve.
