Gold, quoted as XAUUSD, attracts scalpers because of its large intraday ranges. A move of several dollars within minutes is common. But gold differs from currency pairs in ways that matter.
The spread is typically larger in absolute terms, and it widens quickly during active periods. Contract specifications vary by broker, so a lot may represent a hundred ounces or a different amount, and the value of a point differs.
Volatility clusters around US data releases, Fed communications, and geopolitical events. Gold also reacts to real yields and the dollar, but with its own noise.
Risk can rise swiftly. A position that looks small can lose a surprising amount in a minute, because each dollar move translates into a large monetary swing at standard lot sizes.
A practical step is to calculate the monetary value of a typical stop, using the broker's contract details, before trading it. Then size positions accordingly, usually much smaller than for forex.
