Three consecutive losses are statistically ordinary. Any strategy with a win rate under seventy percent will produce them regularly. The emotional effect, though, is far from ordinary.
After the third loss, many traders begin to behave differently. Some become hesitant and skip valid setups. Others get aggressive, loosen their criteria, or increase size to win it back. Neither response follows the plan.
The deeper issue is that the streak has no predictive meaning. The next trade has the same probability as any other. But it feels loaded, and that feeling distorts decisions.
A pre-committed rule works better than willpower in the moment. For example: after three consecutive losses, stop for fifteen minutes, review the last three trades against the criteria, and resume only if all three followed the rules. If they did, the losses were just variance. If not, the problem is behaviour, and it is better to find that out before taking a fourth.
Some traders go further and end the session after a defined number of losses. That depends on the strategy, but having any rule is better than having none.
A written protocol for losing streaks is more effective if it is made when calm. Deciding in advance what counts as a streak, how long to pause, and what to review removes the need for willpower in the moment.
What do you do after three losses in a row, and is it written down or improvised?
