Using currency futures volume as a proxy for spot activity

Post by Shadow Trader »

Spot FX has no central exchange, so there is no official volume number. Retail platforms show tick volume, which counts price changes, not actual trades. That limits what it says about genuine activity.

One workaround is to use currency futures traded on the CME, such as 6E for the euro, 6B for the pound, and 6J for the yen. These contracts trade on an exchange with real volume and open interest figures, and they track spot prices closely.

Volume spikes in futures can confirm whether a spot move has real participation behind it. A breakout on rising futures volume has a different character from one on fading volume.

It is not perfect. Futures represent only a slice of the market, and the quote basis differs slightly from spot. But as a cross-check for scalpers who want more than tick counts, it is a useful tool.

Has anyone paired futures volume with spot charts for short-term trading, and did it improve entries?
