Some platforms and account types offer two position modes. In hedging mode, every order opens a separate position, and opposite positions coexist. In netting mode, there is one position per symbol, and an opposite order reduces or reverses it.
The trap for scalpers is mixing up the two. A trader used to hedging mode places a sell while holding a long, expecting two independent trades. On a netting account, the sell simply closes part or all of the long. The stops and targets attached to the original position may also behave differently than expected.
Automated strategies are even more exposed. A script written for one mode can behave strangely on another, opening unexpected positions or closing existing ones.
Before trading any new account, it is worth placing two small opposite orders on a demo or minimum size and confirming exactly what the platform does with them. It costs almost nothing and removes a whole category of surprise.
Mixed setups, where one platform is used for charts and another for execution, add another layer of confusion. Position displays may differ, and a trade placed in one may appear differently in the other. Verifying the position list after every session keeps the picture consistent.
Which mode do you prefer for scalping, and has a mismatch ever caught you out?
