Flash PMIs come out in the middle of the month and often move EUR. The final PMIs, a week or so later, are revisions of the same survey. I looked at whether the finals matter.
From my logs, EURUSD in the five minutes after a final euro area PMI (manufacturing and services come on separate days, both at 09:00 London) over the last year:
Median range about 6 pips, similar to a normal 09:00.
A move over 12 pips only happened when the revision was large, like a full point, which was rare.
So I don't pause for final PMIs anymore. I do check the calendar for the country releases at 08:15 to 08:45, since Spain and Italy come before the euro area figure, and on rare days those surprise.
The flash numbers stay on my "stop trading" list. Do others treat the finals differently?
Round numbers get blamed for everything, so it is worth separating what is real from what is folklore.
What is real: human beings place orders at numbers they can remember. Take profits, stop losses, option strikes and barriers, and bank client orders all cluster at figures ending in 00 and often 50. That leaves pockets of resting orders and, importantly, pockets of stops sitting just beyond the level.
The pattern that shows up is not usually a clean bounce. It tends to be a poke through the figure, a quick burst as stops trigger, and then either a stall or a snap back. That behavior means the level itself is a worse entry point than the area just beyond it, where the burst has already run out of fuel.
A few details people overlook. Stops and take profits tend to sit a few pips on either side rather than exactly on the figure, so the cluster is a zone, not a line. The 00 level matters more than 50 on most pairs, and on JPY pairs the whole-number figure matters more than anything in between. And on very busy days the level gets sliced right through with barely a hiccup, since resting orders get absorbed by flow far larger than they are.
One practical way to use this is to treat the figure as a magnet and a trap at once. Price is often drawn toward it, then the reaction decides everything.
Do you fade the first touch of a 00 level, wait for the stop run, or just stay out until the reaction shows?
