Offering copy trading: responsibilities that come with it

Post by Shadow Trader »

Copy trading platforms let a strategy provider's trades replicate in followers' accounts. Providers may earn fees based on followers' profits or assets. It can look like easy income for a skilled trader. It carries real responsibilities.

Followers risk real money based on the provider's decisions, often with limited understanding. A provider whose style carries hidden tail risk, such as grids and martingales, can cause severe losses to followers who trusted a smooth curve.

Responsible conduct includes using risk limits consistent with followers' expectations, avoiding strategies that rely on blow-up risk, disclosing the strategy and its drawdown potential, and communicating changes. Not increasing risk to attract followers or chase fees is essential.

Followers experience slippage and delays that the provider doesn't, so results diverge. Fee structures, such as high-water marks, align incentives better than fees on gross profit alone.

Regulation may apply. Managing others' money can require licences in some jurisdictions, and platforms often impose their own rules.

A strategy suitable for personal trading may be unsuitable for copying, especially if it's capacity-limited or highly dependent on fast execution.

Followers also deserve a clear explanation of what happens if the provider stops trading or is unreachable: do positions stay open? Can they be closed manually? Is there a maximum loss setting? Practical details like these separate a responsible offering from a risky one.

What risk standards would apply to a strategy offered to followers, and how would they differ from personal trading?

Nowdays every good trader can provide such service, because its not so complicated to write your own copy trading tool.

I have several instances on my google cloud instances for example. Yeah it take some time to fix all issues, but after that it works very good.

And time to time i trade several of my own accounts with different risk setup in money management.
Preserve your own money. Scale with the market's money. Exponential growth is the ultimate key.
