Carry-style mini positions for scalpers

Post by Shadow Trader »

Carry means holding a currency with a higher interest rate against one with a lower rate, collecting the difference via swap. It's usually a longer-term strategy, but scalpers sometimes wonder whether a small carry position can sit alongside intraday trading.

The logic: a core position earns positive swap each night, while intraday trades add profit on top. In calm markets, it can work. In risk-off episodes, carry trades unwind violently, and the core position loses far more than months of swap income.

Interest rate differentials change, so the swap earned varies over time and across brokers. Brokers also apply their own markups to the swap, so the client's credit is often smaller than the interbank differential, and the charge on the other side larger.

Combining carry with scalping also complicates risk management. The core position ties up margin and reduces buffer for the active trades.

If a carry component is used, sizing it so that a sharp unwind doesn't threaten the account is essential, and keeping it separate in the records makes performance analysis cleaner.

It's worth tracking swap income separately from trading P&L in the records. If the carry component earns a small steady amount while the trading component fluctuates, the accounting can hide the fact that the carry is consuming margin and creating tail risk. Separate columns keep each part honest.

Has a carry position ever been combined with scalping, and how did the swap compare with the risk?
