The One Percent Rule Limits a Trade, Not the Danger of a Bad Run

Post by Shadow Trader »

Risking a fixed small percentage of the account per trade is widely taught as a safety rule. It is a sound habit, but a common myth turns it into a guarantee that the account is protected. The rule controls the size of each individual loss. It does not control how many losses arrive in a row or how correlated those losses are.

Consider a sequence of losing trades. Even at one percent per trade, ten consecutive losses reduce the account by roughly ten percent, and recovering that needs a larger gain than the loss itself. Scalpers who open many trades per day can reach such a streak in a single session.

Correlation adds further risk. Several positions across pairs sharing the same currency can behave like one large position. Three trades each risking one percent may behave like a single trade risking three percent when they all depend on the dollar moving the same way.

Real execution also differs from plan. Slippage, gaps and widened spreads can push an actual loss beyond the intended percentage. A complete risk framework therefore adds a daily loss limit, a cap on combined exposure and a review trigger after a drawdown. A per-trade percentage is only the first layer, and treating it as the whole structure gives a false sense of security.
