Two Nairas: Why Official and Parallel Rates Can Drift Apart

Post by Shadow Trader »

A currency can carry more than one price at the same moment. In Nigeria, the naira has at various times traded at an official rate set through the interbank channel and at a separate rate in informal street markets, sometimes with a visible gap between the two.

Gaps of this kind tend to appear when demand for dollars exceeds what the official channel can supply. Access rules, documentation requirements and queues push some buyers toward informal dealers, who price in the scarcity. When policy changes make official access easier, the gap has historically tended to narrow, though the pace varies and reversals happen.

For a retail scalper, the practical point is that a broker's USD/NGN quote, where one exists, usually tracks an offshore or interbank reference rather than the street price paid for cash or local transfers. A chart can look orderly while the real cost of converting profits at home looks very different. Such pairs are also quoted by few brokers, with wide spreads and heavy gap risk, because liquidity depends on policy decisions more than on continuous two-way flow.

Anyone converting trading proceeds locally should compare the rate actually received against the published reference and read central bank notices on foreign exchange access. Rules change, so official sources remain the only reliable guide.
