Apples and Oranges: Why Online Result Comparisons Mislead

Post by Shadow Trader »

Scrolling through forum threads and social feeds exposes traders to a constant stream of other people's numbers. The natural reaction is to compare, and the comparison almost always favours the other person, because it is built on unequal terms.

Several mismatches hide inside any posted result. Risk per trade may be far larger than a sensible scalper would accept. The period shown may be selected for being the best stretch. Account size, instrument, and session may differ so much that a percentage figure means little across them. And losing periods are posted far less often than winning ones, which tilts the visible sample.

Even honest results are not comparable without knowing the drawdown endured to earn them. A ten percent month with a fifteen percent drawdown is a very different experience from a four percent month with a two percent drawdown.

A more useful benchmark is the trader's own past data: adherence to rules, average cost per trade, and consistency of execution across months. Others' results can still be a source of ideas, but as questions to test carefully, not as scoreboards. Progress is easier to see when the only competitor is last quarter's journal.
