Patience Is an Activity: Waiting With a Purpose

Post by Shadow Trader »

Patience is often confused with doing nothing. In scalping, the two look alike from outside, since no orders are placed, but they differ in what the trader is doing during the wait. Passive waiting is staring at a chart until something looks exciting enough. Skilled patience is structured observation against criteria set in advance.

A useful way to separate them is to define what is being waited for. A scalper who can state the exact conditions, such as a sweep of the prior high followed by a failed push, is working. One who is simply hoping for movement is drifting toward impulse. The first can describe the setup in a sentence; the second can only describe a feeling.

Patience also has components that can be practised. One is tolerance of low stimulation, the ability to watch ordinary candles without needing action. Another is tracking near misses, noting setups that almost qualified and why they did not. That log turns idle minutes into data and makes passing on a marginal entry feel productive rather than empty.

Finally, patience is best measured by the quality of entries, not the length of waits. A long wait followed by a rule-compliant trade is skill. A long wait followed by a rushed trade born of frustration shows that the patience was only borrowed time.
