Why I limit myself to three alerts per session

Post by FXS London Scalper »

I used to have 15–20 price alerts active at any time. My phone buzzed constantly, and I ended up reacting to everything and trading nothing well. Now my rule is a maximum of three alerts per session.

How I pick them:
  1. The level I'd most like to trade from today, based on the morning prep.
  2. A level that would invalidate my bias for the session.
  3. One event-based alert, e.g. a reminder 5 minutes before a data release.
Benefits so far:
  • Every alert means something, so I actually look when it triggers.
  • Preparation got better, because choosing three forces me to rank levels.
  • Fewer impulsive trades on levels I hadn't planned.
The downside: sometimes price moves to a level I didn't alert and I miss a decent trade. I accept that. Missing a trade costs nothing. Taking unplanned ones has cost me plenty.

On the platform side, I use server-side alerts on TradingView so they work when my laptop is closed, and push notifications only, no sound or email.

How many alerts do you run? Has anyone else found that fewer works better?
