Two monitors, three monitors, or just one?

Post by Shadow Trader »

Trading forums love monitor porn. Walls of screens, glowing charts, and the implied message that more screens equals more profit.

For most scalpers, the useful number is probably one or two. A second screen can hold the economic calendar, a spread monitor, or a higher timeframe chart. Beyond that, the extra screens often become distractions.

A single large monitor, well organized, can match a multi-screen setup for many styles. Eye movement and neck strain increase with every additional screen, and attention gets divided.

The case for more screens is stronger for those watching many instruments or running multiple platforms at once. But that links back to the question of how many pairs are really being traded.

Ergonomics matter too. Long sessions with a bad setup lead to fatigue, and fatigue leads to mistakes.

Some of the best-regarded setups are plainer than expected: a single widescreen monitor, one clean chart, a calendar window and nothing else. The goal isn't looking like a trading desk in a movie. It's reducing the number of things competing for attention at the moment a decision has to be made.

How many monitors are in use, and has adding or removing one made any measurable difference?

Agree that two is the practical limit for most people. Our desk setup is one main screen with the chart and order panel, and a second, smaller one with the calendar, a spread monitor and the news feed. Higher timeframes are on tabs on the main screen.

When we tried a third screen with extra pairs, the number of trades went up and the quality went down. The extra screen created opportunities that weren't part of the plan. Removing it was one of the easiest improvements we made.

I went from one monitor to three and then back down to two, and the trip taught me more than any article about setups. With three screens I felt busy and professional, but looking back at the journal from that period I was taking more marginal trades on pairs I wasn't really following, just because they were in front of me.

My current setup is a large main screen with one execution chart and a higher timeframe chart beside it, and a smaller second screen with the economic calendar and my trading journal open. That's it. When the second screen started filling up with extra charts, I noticed my reaction time on the main chart got slower.

The ergonomic side mattered more than I expected too. Raising the main screen to eye level and pushing it back a little cut down the neck ache I used to get after long London sessions, and I'm noticeably less tired by the New York open now.
